Character Creation
Unlike many roleplaying games, Wizards and Warlords does not require you to create a character before you begin playing.
New players are encouraged to attend games, try different classes, meet other players, and learn the world before committing to a character. Once you have found a race and class combination that suits your playstyle, you can create a character and begin your journey in the Free City of Tanyth.
Your First Games
[edit]All new players begin as a Fighter for their first game.
After your first game, you are free to try any available class before creating a character. This allows you to experience different playstyles and learn the game before making any permanent decisions.
You may create a character at any time, but there is no requirement to do so immediately.
Playing Before Character Creation
[edit]Even without a character, your attendance and participation are still recorded.
Each game you attend earns Experience, Reputation, Coin, and any other rewards you would normally receive. These rewards are held on your player record until you create your first character.
This means you can take your time experimenting with classes without falling behind other players.
Creating Characters
[edit]Once you are ready to create a character, all Experience, Reputation, Coin, and other rewards you have earned are assigned to that character.
Creating a character permanently locks in that character's:
Choose carefully, as these decisions define your character's identity and progression.
Creating a Character
[edit]To create a character:
- Choose a Race.
- Choose a Culture.
- Choose a Class.
- Add any starting Spells granted by your Race or Class to your character sheet.
- Spend your starting Spell Points on additional Spells or Spell Levels.
- Choose a Character Name.
- Write a Backstory, if desired.
Once completed, your character becomes an official resident of Tanyth and may begin earning rewards in their own name.
Multiple Characters
[edit]Players may have up to three active characters at any one time.
Each character is treated as an entirely separate individual within the world.
Characters do not share:
- Experience
- Reputation
- Coin
- Items
- Treasures
- Story Progression
When creating a second or third character, that character begins as a brand new resident of Tanyth.
New characters start with:
- 0 Experience
- 0 Reputation
- 0 Coin
- No Items or Treasures
Your existing characters retain all of their own progression separately.
Before each game session, players must nominate which of their characters they will be playing.
Only one character may be played during a game session.
For full-day events, weekend events, campaigns, and other long-form adventures, players must select a single character for the entire duration of the event.
Players may retire or delete characters that they no longer wish to play.
Once every six months, players may request a character consolidation.
During consolidation, one character is selected to receive the Experience earned by another retired character.
The following transfers to the chosen character:
- Experience
The following are not transferred during consolidation:
- Reputation
- Coin
- Items
- Treasures
- Story Rewards
These are lost when the character is retired.
This system allows players to experiment with different character concepts while ensuring progression remains meaningful and manageable.
Mercenaries and Companies
[edit]Mercenaries
[edit]All newly created characters begin as a mercenary of Tanyth.
Being a mercenary is not a class or faction. It simply means your character is an independent adventurer seeking their place within the city. Characters may remain mercenaries for as long as they wish and are not required to join a Company.
Companies
[edit]Companies are player-created groups of characters united by a common purpose, story, theme, culture, belief, or goal.
Companies can take many forms, from military bands and religious orders to explorer societies, trade organisations, and groups of like-minded adventurers.
Joining a Company
[edit]Characters may only join a Company if invited by that Company's leadership.
If you have already been invited before creating your character, you may indicate which Company you intend to join on your character creation form. Otherwise, your character begins as a mercenary and may join a Company later if invited.
You're Ready to Play!
[edit]And with that, you're ready to begin your adventures in Wizards and Warlords.
From here, you can explore the Race, Class, and Magic pages to learn more about the world and the many character options available to you.
